Exercise that required combining a given body of text with a “found object”.

The object I chose for this project was a butterfly paper clip. This object has many different lines and negative space forms within it, so it made for a very good design element in the book. I chose to go with a simple color scheme, as this object was simple in itself. I wanted a bold look, so I chose yellow and black as my two colors for designing. Throughout the book I incorporate photos of the object while having it interact with lines that mimic its form. On some pages the full object is in view, and on others I abstracted the form, as the shapes created are just as interesting as the object itself. I also incorporated a silhouette of the object on many pages, to further the graphic style of the book, and make it more cohesive with the photos. For my title font I used Staalitches, a bold sans serif that went along with my theme really nicely. And for the body copy I chose HomePlanet, another sans serif but with more rounded edges, and a little narrower at a thinner weight to contrast the title font while also working alongside it. I bound my book with zip ties, as they went along with my color scheme and also bold feel to the book, and through those zip ties I threaded the paper clip, which I had bent and twisted to make a rod with a rounded form on top, which mimics the shape on my front cover.
